Understanding the 11+ in our area

A plain guide to the local exams and how they differ. These notes are a starting point, and our tutors walk every family through the detail that applies to their child.

What the 11+ is

The 11+ is the entrance exam for grammar and selective independent schools, usually sat at the start of Year 6. It tests Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non Verbal Reasoning.

The Sutton SET

Sutton grammar schools use a shared selective test, sat in a first and second stage. We prepare children for the exact format so the day itself holds no surprises.

The Kent Test

Kent grammar schools use the Kent Test, covering English, Maths and reasoning. Registration usually opens in the summer before Year 6, and we keep families on top of the dates.

Grammar or independent

Grammar schools are state funded and free. Independent schools charge fees, set their own papers and often add written English and an interview. Many families prepare for both.

Multiple choice or written

Some schools mark answers on a separate sheet, others ask for full written work. We practise both formats so children are comfortable whichever way a school sets its paper.

When to start

Most families begin about eighteen months ahead, in Year 4 or early Year 5. Starting earlier keeps the whole journey calmer, not harder.
